How to Waterproof a Watch?

How to waterproof a watch?

A watch is an essential part of life. Unlike a smartphone, which you must get from your pocket, looking at a watch is simple and takes only seconds. Watches let you keep track of your everyday schedules and activities by telling you the time. In today’s society, being in control of your life is essential, and a watch is an essential accessory.

 Benefits of waterproof watch

You can keep track of your swimming sessions by wearing your watch. You may also go snorkeling and surfing with a waterproof watch. However, depending on the watch’s waterproof levels, you may be able to go scuba diving.

How can you make a waterproof watch?

The tools which are required to waterproof a watch are given below:

What to do with these tools?

Step # 01

Open your watch from the back.

Step # 02

Watch the back gasket and check the O-ring/gasket. Change it if required.

Step # 03

Clean the back of the watch with q-tips with silicone and please ensure the watch back and case are clear of dust and dirt.

Step # 04

  • Remove the watch crown to make the watch waterproof.
  • Remove the stem and crown, then wipe the case tube (if applicable) and crown. It is necessary to replace the crown if it has been damaged.

Step # 05

Apply silicone to the crown and sections of the stem after cleaning them and the tube (the hole in the case). Check to see that the watch’s stem and crown are functional.

Step # 06

Clean the watch’s crystal and examine if there is any crack or damage to the watch crystal. If the crystal is cracked, then change the watch crystal.

Step # 07:-

Get some epoxy, SUC Rocket cement, or G-S Crystal Glue and gently go around the crystal and the case, applying glue on the edge, now that the crystal is either clean or new. This adhesive requires a minimal quantity of application. The goal of this is to seal any minor flaws in the crystal gasket or current crystal glue. Allow time for it to dry at room temperature.

Step # 08

The waterproof gasket should be removed. Now Remove the gasket from the Gasket/O-Ring Lubricator; silicone should be applied to the gasket or O-Ring. Would you please put it in the watch’s back or the case’s groove?

Step # 09

Change the gasket and apply silicone again to the groove of the case. Then, close the watch.

Step # 10

  • Reassemble the watch and clean any leftover adhesive or silicone. Then, water resistance would be 3 to 4 and 5 in the control environment. A.K.A Bergeon waterproof tester.
  • It’s preferable to test the watch with the Bergeon device after you’ve completed all of this work. However, depending on the watch’s caliber, DIY techniques may or may not be worthwhile. If you’re not sure about your skill level or consistency in mechanical repairs and upgrades, hire a professional or get a new watch.

Do you know what to make a waterproof watch?

  • A watch’s water resistance is affected by different factors. The most crucial is the gaskets, or “0-rings,” which provide watertight seals at the joints where the crystal, case back, and crown meet the watch case and are often composed of rubber, nylon, or Teflon.
  • If your watch is a chronograph, the Chronograph pushers need a gasket.
  • Water-resistant watch cases are also lined with a sealant, applied as a quick-hardening liquid, and helps keep water out.
  • The thickness and the material of the case play a to secure the watch in water.
  • The case needs to be strong enough to sustain pressure without collapsing. This necessitates the use of stainless steel or titanium for the case material. Water-resistant cases can be made of solid gold or stainless steel with a gold plating if they are thick enough.
  • Water-resistance is improved by a screw-in case back, as opposed to one that pushes in.
  • A screw-in crown, typical in divers’ watches, keeps water out of the case by preventing water from entering through the watch-stem hole. It provides a watertight seal when screwed down, similar to the seal formed by a jar and its lid.

Is the waterproofing permanent?

No. Nothing is permanent, just as in real life. Water resistance is determined by several parameters, some of which can be influenced by wear or simply time. Gaskets can get rusted or deformed over time, casings can be rejected, and crystals can become loose or cracked. That is why, like your car and teeth, your watch requires routine care.

What should I do if my watch is water-resistant?

  • First, even if your water-resistant watch has been tested for water resistance, it is not recommended to wear it in a hot shower, sauna, or hot tub. Many individuals are unaware of the nature and qualities of metal and, as a result, complain to manufacturers or merchants when their watch fails to withstand water.
  • Some chemicals can cause the gaskets to deteriorate and become vulnerable. Water with a lot of chlorine in it, as well as spray-on fragrances and hairsprays that get into the watch’s seams and harm the gaskets, can create problems.
  • Water-resistant leather straps can also be produced. Leather straps, on the other hand, are generally more susceptible to water damage. Consider building or purchasing a watch with a metal bracelet or a rubber or nylon diver strap if you plan to wear your watch while swimming.

What are the methods for determining whether or not a product is water-resistant?

  • “Dry” and “wet” testing are the two main methods for determining water resistance in machines. The watch is exposed to air pressure, and measurements are recorded to check if the case expands due to air leaking into the case in the former. The watch is not water-resistant if it does.
  • The watch is first subjected to air pressure before being submerged in water in one sort of “wet” testing. If air bubbles emerge from the watch when submerged, this indicates that air had leaked into the watch before it was submerged, and it is thus not water-resistant.
  • The watch is placed in a small water-filled chamber and then subjected to pressure from a piston in another type. It is not water-resistant if water gets into the watch.
